Canucks Trade Fedor Fedorov to Rangers

October 8, 2005

VANCOUVER, British Columbia (AP) _ Fedor Fedorov became the second brother of an NHL All-Star to be traded to the New York Rangers in the last week.

Fedorov, the younger sibling of Anaheim forward Sergei Fedorov, was sent from Vancouver to New York on Friday for forward Jozef Balej and a conditional draft pick. The Rangers originally announced that a fifth-round pick in next year’s draft was included in the deal.

Fedorov was assigned to Hartford of the AHL.

Last Friday, the Rangers acquired Marcel Hossa from the Montreal Canadiens for forward Garth Murray. Hossa’s brother Marian _ a two-time All-Star with Ottawa _ was recently dealt to the Atlanta Thrashers.

Marcel Hossa has already worked out well for New York with two goals in as many games.

The 24-year-old Fedorov spent last season in Russia during the NHL lockout and had seven goals and 10 assists in 29 games with Spartak and Magnitogorsk. In 15 NHL games over two seasons, all with Vancouver, the center had two assists.

Fedorov skated in 58 games with Manitoba of the AHL during the 2003-04 season and had a professional-best 23 goals and 16 assists.

Balej, acquired from Montreal in the deal that sent Alex Kovalev to the Canadiens in March 2004, had 20 goals and 22 assists last season with Hartford.

He had one goal and four assists in 13 games with New York in 2003-04.
