Town mulling fundraisers to fix worrisome levee
GRAND TOWER, Ill. (AP) — A southern Illinois town hoping to raise $1 million to fix a worrisome Mississippi River levee is chipping away at the cost, one charity dinner and yard sale at a time.
The (Carbondale) Southern Illinoisan (http://bit.ly/163rUfV ) reports that the 600-resident Jackson County town last weekend collected more than $10,000 with a dinner fundraiser.
Grand Tower resident Joyce Ellet says a yard sale of donated items is planned for August, along with a daylong musical event called “LeveeFest” in October. Jamie Nash even is selling T-shirts, with proceeds to be directed to the levee fund.
Earlier this year, the levee showed signs of trouble, including holes blamed on the collapse of a drainage pipe.
The levee was given an unsatisfactory rating in mid-2011, making it ineligible for federal funds.
