February 12, 1999

NEW YORK (AP) _ Punter Tom Tupa, an 11-year veteran in the NFL, agreed Friday to a contract with the New York Jets.

Tupa has a 45.5-yard career average with the Phoenix Cardinals, Indianapolis Colts, Cleveland Browns and New England Patriots. He averaged 44.5 yards last season for New England.

Tupa, 33, joined the Patriots in 1996, when the team was coached by Bill Parcells, now coach of the Jets.

``It addresses what I feel was one of our primary needs,″ Parcells said. ``He has punted at a consistent level for the last four years, and our coaching staff is pleased to be reunited with him again.″
