BOSTON (AP) — U.S. Sen. Edward Markey is throwing his support behind Democratic presidential hopeful Hillary Clinton.

The Massachusetts Democrat called the former senator and secretary of state a trailblazer who has "spent her career fighting for American families and working to ensure they can achieve their American Dream."

Markey said Clinton understands challenges facing the nation like college affordability, income inequality and access to affordable health care — and has plans to address them.

Several other top Democratic officials in the state have publicly backed Clinton including Attorney General Maura Healey, Boston Mayor Marty Walsh, and U.S. Reps. Katherine Clark and Joe Kennedy.

Markey said Clinton is also the only candidate with a comprehensive strategy to address the prescription drug and heroin epidemic and is the right candidate to combat climate change.
