Pro Boxer Ray Lathon Fatally Shot
ST. LOUIS (AP) _ A St. Louis man was charged with murdering boxer Ray Lathon, a top cruiserweight who was shot in the head following a workout.
Ahmad Adisa, 27, was arrested Thursday. Police would not discuss a motive, saying it would jeopardize their case.
The 34-year-old fighter was shot Tuesday after training at a recreation center near downtown St. Louis. Police said the gunman entered the gym about 7 p.m. wearing a ski mask and shot Lathon four times in the back of the head. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Lathon had just finished working out and went to a downstairs office to make a telephone call when he was attacked, police chief Ron Henderson said.
He was preparing to fight in the North American Boxing Federation cruiserweight championship in Reno, Nev., in January.
Lathon, who fought in various weight classes, was 22-1 with 21 knockouts. He knocked out Reggie Miller in the second round of his last fight in February.
