Laidlaw to captain Scotland for injured Gilchrist
EDINBURGH, Scotland (AP) — Gloucester scrumhalf Greig Laidlaw is Scotland’s replacement captain against Argentina at Murrayfield on Saturday.
Lock Grant Gilchrist was ruled out of Scotland’s rugby tests this month after breaking his forearm last week, four days after receiving the captaincy from coach Vern Cotter.
Laidlaw was Edinburgh’s skipper for three years before moving to Gloucester for this season. He has led Scotland seven times, including Cotter’s first two matches as coach in June against the United States and Canada.
“He’s an exceptionally competitive player, and everyone respects his desire to win, to drive Scotland forward, and perform well,” Cotter said on Tuesday.
Also, Edinburgh No. 8 David Denton was added to the squad. Denton last appeared in the Six Nations, and missed the offseason tour because of concussion. After the Pumas, Scotland meet New Zealand and Tonga.
