Why we need tolls: Letter
I may be one of a very small group, but I support tolls, and to me it’s a no-brainer. Here’s why: I think we all agree that our roads and bridges need much work. That work is going to cost “x” amount of money, regardless of where the money comes from. So, in effect, the anti-toll people are saying, “we don’t want all of those out-of-state vehicles that pass through our state to contribute to our road repairs. We want to pay for all that work ourselves.”
The tolls would not be an additional expense, as some claim. One way or the other we are going to pay for our roads. The only difference is whether we Connecticut residents foot the entire bill, or we share it with others that use our highways. Most of our neighboring states have always had toll roads, and I’m sure they have been laughing up their sleeves at us.
