Island launches new composting program

SOUTH PADRE ISLAND — What better way to recycle and help the environment than from the comfort of a person’s own back yard?

Instead of throwing away kitchen scraps and outdoor items like twigs and leaves, South Padre Island residents are able to compost these items thanks to the city’s new composter loan program.

SPI City Council member Theresa Metty picked up her composter Thursday and has started loading it with kitchen scraps and garden trimmings.

“I’ve only had it for 24 hours and I’m already a big fan. I would like to have two more because I have a lot more pruning to do in my garden, and the composter is already full,” Metty said.
