SAN DIEGO (AP) _ Tim Gutierrez threw for 304 yards and three touchdowns, including a 59- yarder to Keith Williams on the game’s second play, and San Diego State beat Colorado State 30-3 Saturday night.
Peter Holt kicked three field goals, and Marshall Faulk rushed 18 times for 89 yards and caught five passes for 48 yards for the Aztecs (5-2, 3-0 Western Athletic Conference). It was the fourth time this season that Faulk, the two- time national rushing leader, was held to less than 100 yards on the ground.
The Rams (2-5, 2-2) lost for the sixth straight time at San Diego Jack Murphy Stadium.
Gutierrez completed 21 of 31 passes, with one interception. It was his third 300-yard game in four starts since replacing the injured David Lowery.
The Aztecs took a 20-0 lead by scoring on four of their first five possessions. After Faulk gained 16 yards to the Aztecs 41 on the first play, Williams pulled in a pass from Gutierrez along the right sideline near the Rams 40, cut inside and raced into the end zone.
Holt kicked field goals of 34 and 33 yards, and Gutierrez threw a 14-yard pass to Curtis Shearer in the left corner of the end zone with 6:34 left before halftime.
Colorado State, coming off a 34-32 upset of Fresno State, didn’t cross the 50 until the ensuing drive, its fifth. The Rams benefited from two pass interference and a personal foul, but had to settle for David Napier’s 34-yard field goal to make it 20-3 at halftime.
Rams starting quarterback Erich Prahl was only 1-of-6 for 7 yards in the first half and was replaced by Anthoney Hill.
Hill’s pass was intercepted by Darrell Lewis at the San Diego State 33 early in the third quarter. Darnay Scott ran a reverse 52 yards to the Colorado State 15, but the Aztecs had to call on Holt for a 26-yard field goal.
Gutierrez went 6-for-6 for 74 yards on the next drive, including a 12-yard TD pass to Jake Nyberg with 4:41 left in the third.
Hill threw a 43-yard pass to Paul Turner to the San Diego 6 late in the quarter and ran 1 yard into the end zone three plays later, but the touchdown was nullified by an illegal procedure call. Another penalty and a sack brought up fourth-and-goal from the 15, and a Hill to Turner pass fell incomplete.
Hill was 5-of-21 for 92 yards, with one interception.
