C R Renegade Wins Yonkers Trot

August 29, 1999

YONKERS, N.Y. (AP) _ C R Renegade, who finished a disappointing ninth in the Hambletonian, rebounded in the second leg of the trotting triple crown with a length victory over San Pellegrino in the $273,891 Yonkers Trot at Yonkers Raceway on Saturday night.

The 3-year-old colt extended his winning streak to three races and earned $136,845 to boost his career earnings to $552,129, all this year. The son of Royal Troubador ran only once as a 2-year-old and didn’t earn a dollar. He is 8-3-1 in 15 starts this year.

San Pellegrino edged Pearsall Hanover in a photo for second.

It was the fourth Yonkers Trot victory for owner-trainer Carl Allen and the second for his son and driver, Rod Allen.

``It’s the one race we shoot for every year,″ Carl Allen said of the Yonkers Trot. ``Renegade is a real handy horse and Rod should get all the credit. He does a super job driving him.″

Carl Allen drove Mo Bandy to victory in 1981 and Royal Troubador in 1990. Rod Allen won in 1995 with C R Kay Suzie, a full sister to C R Renegade.

``He gave me a great effort,″ Rod Allen said. ``I had to work to get him in front and once we got there I didn’t have to stop driving him at all.″

C R Renegade was clocked in 1:58 and paid $3.30, 2.60 and 2.20. San Pellegrino returned $17.60 and $8.20, while Pearsall Hanover was $4.30 to show.

C R Renegade will run in the World Trotting Derby next Saturday at DuQuoin, Ill., and also will race in third leg of the triple crown, the Kentucky Futurity on Oct. 8 at Lexington, Ky.

Self Possessed, who set a world record of 1:51 3-5 in winning the Hambletonian, skipped the Yonkers Trot.
