Week 4 Pro Picks winner: George Tschida

The Herald-Argus Pro Picks contest winner for Week 4 of the National Football League was George Tschida, of La Porte. He was the only person in our contest to earn a 12-2 record. He missed the Houston-Indianapolis game and the Kansas City-Denver game. Tschida, along with every weekly winner, receives $50.

La Porte Volleyball Sectional schedule

The schedule has been set for next week’s La Porte Volleyball Sectional. Play begins at 5 p.m. on Oct. 10 with South Bend Adams and South Bend Riley. Penn and Plymouth meet at 5 p.m. on Oct. 11, followed by La Porte and Mishawaka. The Oct. 13 semifinals start at 10 a.m. with the championship set for 6 p.m. Tickets are $6 per session or $10 for the whole week. Spectators may enter from either the main entrance off of I Street or Door 23 off of F Street.

Area volleyball sectional draw

The IHSAA announced pairings for the volleyball sectionals on Sunday. Michigan City plays Merrillville in the first round of the Class 4A Hobart Sectional. New Prairie faces Jimtown in a Class 3A Mishawaka Marian Sectional opener, and Marquette meets the host Cherokees in the first round of the Class A Morgan Township Sectional. Westville plays Kouts in another opener at Morgan Township, and LaCrosse faces the host Cavaliers in a Class A Culver Sectional opener. South Central meets Triton in another first-round match at Culver. Sectionals run Tuesday, Thursday and Oct. 13.

Glenn football drubs Clay, earns first win

John Glenn’s football team thumped visiting South Bend Clay 51-0 to record its first victory of the season on Friday night. Nathan Creed rushed for two touchdowns for the Falcons (1-7, 1-4 Northern Indiana Conference), and Garrett West, Mike Lawler, Johnny Drews, and Seth Giese all had a rushing TD. West also returned a punt for a touchdown. Weston Salyer and Sam Bishop both had an interception for Glenn’s defense. The Falcons next travel to South Bend Riley next Friday night.

2019 13U La Porte Crush baseball tryouts

2019 13U La Porte Crush baseball is looking for a few more players and will hold a tryout on Saturday at 10 a.m. at the ball fields at US 6 and US 421 in Westville. Normally tryouts would be at Schreiber Field in La Porte, but due to field improvements this fall, they’ll have tryouts in Westville this year. Players can’t be older than 13 as of April 30, 2019.
