October 13, 1999

BEIJING (AP) _ A former financial official in the Chinese city of Guangzhou was sentenced to 18 years in prison for embezzlement and taking bribes, the state-run news agency reported Wednesday.

Shao Rucai, who headed the city’s finance bureau and was Communist Party chief for the municipal tax bureau and the city’s state-owned assets administration, was found guilty of diverting $120,000 into a company run by his son, the Xinhua report said.

It said Shao also was convicted of taking bribes worth the equivalent of $46,000 and of earning illegal income worth $111,200.

Shao is among thousands of senior officials sentenced to jail in a campaign against the rampant corruption that has angered the public and tarnished the image of the ruling Communist Party.
