Giants Turn Triple Play Vs. Cubs

May 8, 1998

CHICAGO (AP) _ The San Francisco Giants turned a triple play in the fourth inning of Friday’s game with the Chicago Cubs, their first in nearly 18 years.

With Chicago’s Mark Grace on second and Henry Rodriguez on first, Jeff Blauser hit a liner to first baseman Charlie Hayes.

Both Grace and Rodriguez were caught off their bases as Hayes stepped on first and threw to shortstop Rich Aurilia at second to retire the side. Chicago had already scored twice in the inning.

It was San Francisco’s first triple play since Oct. 3, 1980, against San Diego. The previous triple play the Cubs hit into was Aug. 23, 1993 at Montreal.
