WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. (AP) _ Andrez Gomez defeated John McEnroe 3-6, 6-3, 6-2, Sunday to win the Corel Champions men’s over-35 professional tennis tournament.
Gomez, who turns 36 Tuesday, is the youngest player on the Champions Tour. He earned his second Champions Tour title in his first year on the tour, taking home the $40,000 prize.
``I’ve been waiting 20 years for a chance to beat John,″ Gomez said. ``Beating Jimmy and John _ that’s two of the best we have. It’s special for me, and gives me a lot of confidence for next week’s Nuveen Masters.″
On his way to the finals, Gomez defeated Jose-Luis Clerc and top seed Jimmy Connors.
McEnroe had beaten Gomez in their two previous meetings _ in the 1987 U.S. Open and the 1995 NTT Data Champions in Tokyo.
