U.S. Sweeps Dashes at German Event

CHEMNITZ, Germany (AP) _ American sprinters broke a string of German victories by sweeping the 100-meter dashes in an international track and field meet Wednesday.

Dennis Mitchell cruised to victory in the men’s 100 in 10.17 seconds to beat Eric Nkansah of Ghana, who was second in 10.40.

The women’s 100 went to Zundra Feagin, who won in 11.55 to nip Martha Adusei of Canada, also timed in 11.55.

Derek Mills gave the small American contingent another victory by winning the men’s 400 in 45.44, with Kennedy Ocheing of Kenya second in 45.50. Pjotr Haczek of Poland was third in 45.64.

German veteran Heike Drechsler and her teammate Susen Tiedtke were beaten in the women’s long jump.

Dawn Burrell won at 22 feet, 2 1/4 inches. Olga Rublyova of Russia was second at 21-8 3/4. Drechsler went only 21-5 1/2 and Tiedtke 21-5 1/4.
