Charges filed in semi theft case
A 30-year-old California man arrested Wednesday in Hastings with a stolen semitrailer truck has been charged in Hall County Court.
Prosecutors Thursday charged Juan C. Aguilar-Alvarez with theft by unlawful taking an item with a value more than $5,000, a Class 2A felony punishable by up to 20 years in prison.
Judge Alfred Corey appointed a public defender to represent Aguilar-Alvarez and scheduled a preliminary hearing for Dec. 14 at 10:30 a.m. Bond was set at $20,000 with 10 percent cash needed for his release.
Troopers with the Nebraska State Patrol learned about 10:30 a.m. Wednesday that a semi-tractor and trailer had been taken from State Steel in Grand Island, according to a news release from the NSP.
Troopers located the vehicle as it entered Hastings southbound on U.S. Highway 281/34 and attempted a traffic stop. The driver refused to stop and continued south on Burlington Avenue.
The driver eventually came to a stop between Third and Fourth streets. Officers were video recorded approaching the truck with weapons drawn and ordered the driver out of the vehicle.
The driver, identified as Aguilar-Alvarez, was taken into custody without further incident.
