Longtime Orange sheriff Lindy Pendergrass dies
Longtime Orange County Sheriff Albert “Lindy” Pendergrass has died, Sheriff Charles Blackwood said Sunday.
A Chapel Hill native, Pendergrass served in the Marines before returning home and joining the Chapel Hill Police Department, where he rose through the ranks to become major in the investigations unit.
After retiring from Chapel Hill, he was elected Orange County sheriff in 1982 and held office until his retirement in 2014.
“Sheriff Pendergrass was an outstanding leader and tenacious lawman,” Blackwood said. “Please keep the family in your thoughts and prayers.”
Funeral arrangements are pending.
