Brian Martin Wins Luge Start Test
LAKE PLACID, N.Y. (AP) _ It was a banner Wednesday for U.S. luger Brian Martin.
Martin, of Palo Alto, Cal., powered his way to first place among the men in the U.S. Luge team’s annual start championships.
Martin and his partner, Mark Grimmette of Muskegon, Mich., who took the Olympic doubles bronze at Nagano in February, won the doubles start competition, edging Nagano silver medalists Gordy Sheer of Croton, N.Y., and Chris Thorpe of Marquette, Mich.
``Winning these races shows I’m pretty quick and strong, but I need to get better,″ said Martin, who won $1,000 for his efforts. ``Mark and I haven’t done a lot of starts because we want to get over some little injuries. We want to get even faster.″
Two-time Olympian Erin Warren of Somerville, Mass., who was sixth at Nagano, captured the women’s start race. She edged junior national team member Ashley Hayden of Westboro, Mass.
There was one injury of note. Lake Placid’s Adam Heidt, who was second after three heats, withdrew with a pulled hamstring.
