Detroit Fire Kills Five Children
ROYAL OAK TOWNSHIP, Mich. (AP) _ An overnight house fire in suburban Detroit killed four children and a fifth was missing and presumed dead early today, authorities said.
At least four other children were injured, Oakland County Sheriff’s Lt. Joe Quisenberry said.
A nursing supervisor at William Beaumont Hospital said two patients were listed in serious condition. A Providence Hospital official said two victims were taken there, but she declined to give their conditions.
The front half of the two-story home was destroyed by the blaze. Authorities dug through the smoldering debris in the pre-dawn darkness.
Sheriff’s officials declined to immediately provide other details on the fire in Royal Oak Township, which borders Detroit.
There was no immediate word on the cause of the fire.
