Italy 7, Poland 1
MERIBEL, France (AP) _ U.S.-born goaltender David Delfino made 32 saves Thursday, as Italy moved into position for a run at a spot in hockey’s medal round with a 7-1 victory over Poland.
Five different players scored first-period goals for Italy (1-2), which probably needs one more victory to qualify for the playoffs. Its remaining games are against Germany and Finland.
Poland (0-3) has been outscored 23-4.
Italy never looked back after Bruno Zarillo scored his first of two goals 3:05 into the game. Emilio Iovio followed with a breakaway goal, Giuseppe Foglietta scored at the end of a 2-on-1 break and Lucio Topatigh scored on a rebound for a 4-0 lead. Santino Pellegrino made it 5-1 after one period.
After playing superbly for two periods before tiring in Italy’s 6-3 loss to the United States, Delfino on Thursday allowed only Robert Szopinski’s first- period goal.
