Riverside Discovery Centers seeks volunteers to help with fall cleanup
SCOTTSBLUFF - Riverside Discovery Center is looking for a few volunteers looking to give back to the community, the zoo’s first fall Cleanup Volunteer/Community Service Day.
The zoo is inviting individuals, youth, schools, businesses, churches and social groups to participate in the event. Zoo Director Anthony Mason said the day is an opportunity to assist an important community institution and fulfill community service hours.
“This is a great time to give back to the community and you get a free day pass out of it,” said Alex Henwood, eduction curator. “The zoo belongs to the community so it’s great whenever the community comes together to make it look good.”
The work will be primarily outdoor lawn cleanup around the zoo, including raking leaves, pulling weeds and picking up fallen branches.
“It is going to be just mild yard work,” Henwood said. “It’s a way to help us get the grounds looking good in time for Spooktacular.”
Everyone who participates for four hours will receive a free day pass to the zoo. Volunteers are asked to bring their own work gloves. They can bring their own rakes as well.
“We’re also encouraging anyone with an “adopt a spot” area to come and clean up their area that day, too,” said Alice Lara, maintenance team.
Henwood said with everyone helping, the time will go by quickly while helping keep the zoo looking beautiful.
There are plenty of ways to help during the fall Cleanup Volunteer/Community Service Day and zoo staff said no one will be bored.
“We have a lot of different areas to work,” Lara said.
The Cleanup Volunteer/Community Service Day will be held on Saturday, Sept. 29 from 8 a.m. to noon. Snacks and water will be provided. Those who participate that day, will also be treated to an animal encounter at the end of their volunteer time. If you need community service hours, Henwood advises you bring your slips with you and they will be signed at the end of the day.
Anyone unable to volunteer that day can contact Alice Lara or Valencia Lara at the zoo at 308-630-6236 for other community service opportunities at the zoo throughout the year, including maintenance, petting zoo monitor, horticulture, animal diet preparations and docents.
