January 3, 2019

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — The State Highway Patrol says provisional statistics show 11 traffic deaths were reported in Ohio during the New Year holiday.

The patrol says the statistics show that six of those fatalities resulted from not wearing an available seat belt and four were related to driving under the influence.

Troopers made 448 arrests for driving under the influence and 231 drug arrests. They also issued 952 safety belt citations.

The five-day reporting period began at midnight December 28 and ran through 11:59 p.m. on Tuesday. Six fatalities were reported in the four-day reporting period the previous year.

The patrol says provisional statistics also show 1,063 confirmed fatalities on Ohio’s roads in 2018, a 10 percent decrease compared to 2017.
