Greenwich boys swim team tops rival Fairfield Prep

Defeating its biggest rival, the Greenwich High School boys swimming team upped its record to 6-0 with a decisive 124-62 win over visiting Fairfield Prep on Saturday.

The Cardinals build a significant lead on the Jesuits after two events. The foursome of Justin Jacob, Tommy Lewis, Stephan Todorovic and Mark Merson placed first for Greenwich in the 200-yard medley relay in a season-best time of 1:38.22. Teammates Ryan Jee, Matt Lourenco, Spencer Plavoukos and Niki de la Sierra were third in the 200 medley relay for GHS.

In the 200-yard freestyle, Stephan Todorovic, Andres Ruh and Charlie Clark finished 1-2-3, respectively for the home team. Todorovic won the event in 1:48.55 for Greenwich, which led Fairfield Prep (which was missing a pair of key swimmers due to injuries) 23-7, after two events.

Greenwich added a pair of sweeps in the 50-yard freestyle and diving events. Nick Malchow posted a winning time of 22.30, while de la Sierra and Merson were right behind him. All three Cardinals divers soared to lifetime high point totals. Sophomore Joel Satir led the way on the 1-meter board with 275.60 points, while Michael McNulty amassed 233.95 points and for Logan Barnett scored 232.95.

In the 100 freestyle, Clark edged sophomore Malchow for first place by a tenth of a second, clocking in at 49.39. Stephan Todorovic won the 100 butterfly with a time of 52.67. Jacob continued his rapid improvement, winning the 100 breaststroke with a personal-best time of 54.17.

The Cardinals also won both freestyle relay races. The quartet of Merson, de la Sierra, Malchow and Clark won the 200-yard freestyle, clocking in at 1:31.11. Malchow and Clark combined with Todorovic and Ryan Jee to win the 400 freestyle with a season-best showing of 3:18.63.

The loss was the first in-state defeat for Fairfield Prep. The Jesuits received a first-place finish from Richard Nolan in the 200-yard individual medley (1:55.37).

Nolan also won the 500 freestyle, registering a time of 4:48.07.

Greenwich hosts Westhill on Wednesday at 4:30 p.m. Fairfield Prep (3-2) visits Xavier on Tuesday at Wesleyan University at 7:30 p.m.
