New tool tracks demographics of Boston city employees
BOSTON (AP) — The city of Boston has introduced an interactive tool that tracks and regularly updates the demographics of the city’s roughly 20,000 employees.
The Boston Globe reports (http://bit.ly/1rU5RJl ) the employee demographics dashboard will be updated monthly to provide current statistics on staffing levels by race, gender, salary and tenure of workers. The tool was unveiled Tuesday on the city’s website.
Chief Diversity Officer Danielson Tavares says the dashboard will allow for him to better evaluate city departments that strongly promote diversity and those that need more work.
Tavares says the goal of the initiative is to track the progress of diversity within each department.
According to the dashboard, nearly 54 percent of Boston’s workforce is white while black and Hispanic employees account for 28.5 percent and 12.2 percent respectively.
