Vigil is Monday for carjacking victim, effort starts to help family of mother of two

CLEVELAND, Ohio – A community candlelight vigil will be held Monday for Lesley Dejesus, and fundraising efforts have begun to assist her family and help pay the funeral expenses of the 33-year-old mother of two who was killed by carjackers Thursday afternoon.

The vigil, organized with the Julia De Burgos Cultural Arts Center, will be at 5:30 p.m. Monday at the Archwood United Church of Christ, 2800 Archwood Ave.

Dejesus, her husband and children were volunteers painting inside the church, partly in preparation for her daughter’s quinceanera – the traditional celebration of a girl’s 15th birthday – when they saw two men stealing their car and intervened, holding onto the doors as the carjackers drove away.

Her husband was dragged by the car and injured. She was run over twice and pronounced dead at the scene.

Crime Stoppers of Cuyahoga County is offering up to $5,000 for tips that lead to the arrests of the two carjackers. Anyone with information is asked to call 216-252-7463 or go to 25crime.com. Tipsters can remain anonymous.

A GoFundMe page has been set up to assist the family at gofundme.com/lesley-de-jesus.
