Police: Teens “Befriended,” Killed Foreign Visitor Near Quarter

May 2, 1994

NEW ORLEANS (AP) _ Two teen-age girls killed a foreign visitor Sunday after ″befriending″ him, luring him to a deserted park near the French Quarter and then trying to rob him, police said.

The man was shot while trying to wrest a gun away from one of the girls during the robbery attempt, Sgt. Barry Fletcher said.

Police were trying to confirm the man’s identity, Fletcher said. They wouldn’t say where he was from or why he was in New Orleans.

Chanda Desilva, 18, was booked with first-degree murder, Fletcher said. A 16-year-old girl was arrested late Sunday and also faced a first-degree murder charge, he said. The name of the younger girl was not released because she is a juvenile.

Police did not know how the three met, but they went to Armstrong Park, where the juvenile apparently pulled a gun, Fletcher said.

The murder was New Orleans’ 152nd this year, but it was the first killing of a foreign visitor in a year.

″The murder of tourists is very rare,″ Fletcher said.

The last foreign visitor killed in New Orleans was Adrian Strasser, a Scot who was bludgeoned to death when he wandered into a high crime area near the French Quarter. He died April 10, 1993.
