Yuki Sushi and Teishoku brings traditional Japanese home-cooked meals to Richmond

January 11, 2019

Owners of a brand-new traditional Japanese restaurant in Richmond are inviting the public to try one their savory teishoku dishes at a ribbon-cutting this month.

Yuki Sushi and Teishoku House is hosting an official ribbon-cutting ceremony on Thursday, Jan. 24 at 4:45 p.m. at its Richmond location, the only Yuki Sushi in North America, said Fulvio Martinez, Yuki spokesman.

While the restaurant has been open since November 2018, the ceremony will be held in conjunction with the Katy Area Chamber of Commerce, he said.

“It’s an initiative that we’re doing with them to give an actual date of commencement for operating the store, even though we’ve been open for some time now,” he said. “We’re trying to get the word out to the community about this unique concept.”

The restaurant features traditional style home cooked meals - called teishoku - made with beef, pork or chicken and served with side dishes, Martinez said.

“That’s what is unique about the restaurant is the teishoku,” he said. “That’s a Japanese set meal, which is basically the Japanese equivalent to soul food. Teishoku is a tradition in Japanese culture that comes from the people and culture. It’s a very fast-paced way of eating and still have a home-made, nutritious meal.”

In some Yuki restaurants in Japan, consumers don’t even have to interact with a waiter until have they completed their transaction and selected their food, he said.

“You would actually walk up to an ATM-style machine, choose your meal and then you get a ticket. At that point, you would hand it to somebody,” he said, adding that it’s similar to bento boxes. “Teishoko takes it to the next level as far as authenticity. They really strive for that home-made sort of taste.”

Some of the food options available include a Chef’s Gyudon, a beef bowl with rice and onion simmered in a mildly sweet sauce flavored with soy sauce, mirin or sweet rice wine and dashi or fish and seaweed stock.

All these dishes can be complemented with rolls and sushi, Martinez said.
