Ohio man accused of assault at Somerset convenience store

August 3, 2018

A 61-year-old Cleveland, Ohio, man is accused of grabbing another man by the throat and slamming him against a cooler at Turkey Hill Minit Market along North Center Avenue in Somerset Borough Thursday morning.

Martin Joseph Colleran allegedly made a derogatory comment toward the man about a T-shirt he had worn a day or so before. Colleran then assaulted him, according to Somerset Borough police. A witness called the police and Colleran fled, police said.

The victim suffered red marks and a lump on the left side of his head, police said.

Police learned that Colleran was staying in Room 152 at the Knights Inn along Gateway Road in Somerset and contacted him there.

He was arraigned before District Judge Ken Johnson of Somerset Thursday on charges of simple assault, a second-degree misdemeanor, and harassment, a summary offense. Colleran was placed in the Somerset County Jail in lieu of a $25,000 bond.

A preliminary hearing is scheduled at 11:20 a.m. Tuesday before Johnson.
