November 9, 1994

NEW YORK (AP) _ Paul Frame, who illustrated some 200 children’s books, including the Nancy Drew and Hardy Boys adventure series, died Tuesday at the age of 80. He had suffered from lung cancer, said his wife, Jean.

Frame once said he understood the Nancy Drew character because ″she was like the girls I knew in high school.″

His other credits included editions of ″Tom Sawyer,″ ″Huckleberry Finn,″ ″Casey at the Bat,″ ″Knights of the Round Table″ and ″Willie’s Whizmobile.″

Frame began his career in 1936 at Lord & Taylor, where he designed the rose still used as a symbol of the upscale store.

After service in the Air Force in World War II, he turned to book illustrating.

Along with his wife, survivors include two daughters.
