Southern Utah 34, Arkansas St. 24

JONESBORO, Ark. (AP) _ Brooks Madsen ran for 187 yards and two touchdowns and Joe Dupaix accounted for two touchdowns while rushing for 144 yards as Southern Utah beat Arkansas State 34-24 on Saturday night.

Arkansas State (1-2) led 17-9 at the half, but the Thunderbirds (3-1) scored 22 straight to take a 31-17 lead early in the fourth quarter.

Madsen’s 31-yard run and Dupaix’s 2-point conversion tied it 17-17 early in the third quarter. The touchdown completed a three-play, 76-yard drive after the second-half kickoff.

Dupaix’s 4-yard run ended a 46-yard drive and put the Thunderbirds in front 24-17. Dupaix completed 3-of-9 passes, but one was a 21-yarder to Blake Bingham for a touchdown with four minutes gone in the final period.

Brent Pettus replaced Arkansas State starter Jeremie Watkins and completed a 4-yard pass to Ron Teat with 6:57 left. Watkins was 7-of-23 with four interceptions.

Dupaix, who set a record for Division I-AA quarterbacks when he ran for 1,246 yards last year, made several big plays as the Thunderbirds used 6 1/2 minutes during a 12-play drive. Matt Rhea’s 28-yard field goal finished the drive.

Southern Utah, which was averaging 390 yards per game rushing in its first three games, made 433 on the ground to Arkansas State’s 94 on 29 running plays.

The Indians went in front 10-9 on Jeff Sowell’s 39-yard field goal midway through the second quarter. Sean Mitchell’s 37-yard fumble return upped the lead to 17-9 with 1:35 left in the half.
