Officials to break ground on state firefighters memorial
EXETER, R.I. (AP) — A groundbreaking ceremony is scheduled for a new memorial dedicated to Rhode Island firefighters.
The Rhode Island Association of Fire Chiefs says the ceremony is scheduled to take place at the Rhode Island Fire Training Academy in Exeter on Thursday afternoon.
WJAR-TV reports the association says Rhode Island is one of only a few states without a statewide memorial for firefighters.
Money for the memorial was raised privately and the site will eventually be turned over to the state.
The goal is to open the memorial by the middle of next year.
The association of fire chiefs says it wants to site to be a place for “reflection and remembrance” while at the same time “honoring and memorializing” the state’s fire service.
