Mets’ Huskey Harassed By Fans

April 8, 1998

CHICAGO (AP) _ New York outfielder Butch Huskey said he had to listen to a barrage of verbal insults from bleacher fans during the Mets’ 3-2 win Tuesday over the Chicago Cubs.

Huskey, who is black and wears No. 42 in honor of Jackie Robinson _ he was grandfathered when all teams retired the number last year _ would not repeat the taunts but said they were racial in nature.

``Stuff like that should be on `Jerry Springer,′ ″ Huskey said. ``It’s not very ethical. I don’t care what anyone says, you’re going to hear that stuff. You just have to be able to laugh and try to have fun with them.″

He didn’t have any solutions for curbing the fans’ behavior.

``What are you going to do? You can’t monitor them like babies,″ Huskey said.
