Hartington woman killed in accident
HARTINGTON — An 82-year-old Hartington woman was killed Tuesday evening as the result of a three-vehicle traffic accident on Highway 81 in Cedar County.
Larry Koranda, Cedar County sheriff, said a southbound GMC Sonoma driven by Marjorie Novak of Hartington collided head on about 6 p.m. Tuesday with a northbound Chevy Equinox driven by an unidentified man from Yankton. A northbound Nissan Rogue driven by Brenda Saltzman, 52, of Sioux Falls then collided with the rear end of the Equinox.
Koranda said Novak was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident, which occurred at about mile marker 208 in Cedar County.
The Yankton driver was initially transported to Avera Sacred Heart Hospital in Yankton by ambulance and then by medical helicopter to Sanford Medical Center in Sioux Falls with life-threatening injuries.
Saltzman and her two passengers were transported to Avera Sacred Heart Hospital by ambulance with non-life threatening injuries, Koranda said.
Novak was not wearing a seat belt. All others involved were wearing seat belts, he said.
The accident remains under investigation by the Cedar County Sheriff’s office. Assisting at the scene Tuesday were the Nebraska State Patrol, Yankton and Crofton EMS and the Crofton Fire Department.
