girls soccer Wreckers upend Cards

September 27, 2018

WESTPORT — The beat goes on for the Staples girls soccer team.

The Wreckers netted two second-half goals to put away a feisty Greenwich side to improve to 6-0 on the young season en route to a 3-0 FCIAC victory over the Cardinals on Wednesday at Wakeman Field.

“In the first half, Greenwich fought well,” said Staples head coach Barry Beattie, who has led the program to a great deal of success during his tenure in Westport. “In the second half, I thought our quality shone and by the way the two goals were scored it was plain to see.”

Staples, which was runner-up a season ago in the FCIAC and Class LL , grabbed a 1-0 lead off a header by junior defender and captain Mia Gonzalez off a corner kick from Autumn Smith 14 minutes into the game. The Cardinals fended off the high-scoring Wreckers over the first 40 minutes as Staples took a 1-0 advantage into halftime.

“I was happy with how we approached the game,” Greenwich head coach Simon Rumbold said. “We started off well and we talked about staying compact and being mostly solid and I thought we did that. They (Staples) have some really quality players so it’s difficult to do against good players.”

Greenwich goalie Augusta Garrett, who finished with 12 saves, did her best to contain the lethal scorers for the Wreckers but with the way they found the back of the net in the second half, there was nothing she could do.

Senior forward and captain Ashley Wright gathered up the ball at the top of the box and fired off a shot that landed in the upper right corner of the net with 26:25 left in the game to give Staples a 2-0 lead.

“In the second half we settled the game down and played more through midfield and we were able to connect passes better,” Wright said.

The third goal by the Wreckers was a picture perfect strike from Reese Sutter. The junior midfielder said she was frustrated after coming up empty on several previous scoring chances so she maneuvered through three defenders in the box and launched a left-footed shot into the upper left corner of the net with 11:15 remaining in the contest.

“If a single player scores a better goal across the FCIAC I’d be shocked,” Beattie said. “It was a great goal.”

Senior goalie Zoe Barnett provided another clean sheet for the Wreckers and only needed to make three saves in posting the shutout.

PLAYER OF THE GAME

Autumn Smith, Staples

The sophomore all-state midfielder assisted on the Wreckers’ first goal and led the Staples on offense in her team’s 3-0 victory.

KEY PLAY

Staples’ Ashley Wright found the back of the net with 26:25 remaining in the game to put the Wreckers over the top in a 3-0 win over Greenwich.

QUOTABLE

“I’m happy with how we played,” Beattie said. “I feel we have another level to go to which is exciting.”

“Getting that first goal was reassuring that we could do this and take dominance of the game,” Gonzalez said.

“We rushed it in the first half,” Sutter said. “We usually try and go through our wide mids and drop balls in from behind but it’s harder on the turf field so we had to switch it up.”
