Belgians, Japanese and Americans Win Pastry Competition

LYON, France (AP) _ Entering chocolate confections and desserts from their homeland, a team of Belgian chefs has won the World Pastry Cup competition. Second place went to a team from Japan, and three Americans won third.

Belgium’s Pierre Marcolini, Rike de Baere and Johnny De Neef took top honors Monday for their chocolate creation featuring three figures in flight. They will receive a trophy and share the $7,200 prize.

Three Japanese, Tadshi Yanagi, Taihei Oikawa and Junishi Goto, won second place _ $4,800.

Placing third _ and sharing a $2,400 prize _ were Donald Wressel, pastry chef at the Four Seasons Hotel in Los Angeles, Kurt Walrath, pastry chef at the Essex House in New York City; and Joe Decker, a cooking instructor from Livonia, Mich.

Fifteen countries took part in the two-day event, which is held every two years. Participating chefs were chosen by their national culinary organizations.
