Dutch Group Protests Euro
UTRECHT, Netherlands (AP) _ A group of squatters protesting the introduction of the single European currency attacked a concert hall where the staff of the Dutch central bank were holding a Christmas party, pelting the building with eggs and smashing windows.
About 50 squatters attacked the Vredenburg hall in Utrecht, 31 miles east of Amsterdam, where 350 staff members from the Netherlands Bank were partying Monday night.
Police called to break up the protest arrested five demonstrators, Dutch television news reported Tuesday.
The single European currency, the euro, will debut on paper on Jan. 1. Euro coins and notes come into circulation in the 11 participating nations by June 30, 2002.
