Turner, Robinson win TAPPS state gold

St. John XXIII senior Benjamin Turner and Faith West senior Joey Robinson led their respective schools with gold medals at the TAPPS state track and field championships, May 3-4 at Waco Midway High School.

Turner cleared 14 feet in the pole vault for the 6A boys state championship, leading a group of five Lions competing as individuals.

Robinson set a 4A record in the discus with a heave of 161 feet, 5 inches. He also won silver in the shot put, throwing 48-1.

Faith West sophomore Savannah Zavidny won a bronze medal in the girls long jump, leaping 16-6.

SJ23 senior Andrew Blick qualified for both 6A boys throwing events, taking fourth in the shot put (45-1.5) and seventh in the discus (134-2).

Junior Nolan Diers (5th, 800-meter run), Chris Echevarria (8th, 300-meter hurdles) and Adrian Martinez (8th, 200-meter dash) added points for the Lions, as did the mile relay team of Diers, Canyon Neundorfer, Echevarria and Turner.

Faith West girls golf third at state

Kelsey Wylie finished third overall to lead the Eagles to a third-place finish at the TAPPS state golf tournament, April 29-30 at Squaw Valley Golf Course in Glen Rose.

Wylie carded rounds of 74 and 71 for a score of 145. The Eagles were further represented by Casey Larson (96-94—190), Kate Lobries (125-120—245), Allison Hilton (129-123—252) and Bianca Parr (139-136—275).

Faith West shot a 424 and a 408 for a team total of 832 to rank third of eight teams.
