Kayakers missing in Wabasha County found

August 9, 2018

WABASHA — Two kayakers in Wabasha County last heard from Wednesday evening were located alive early Thursday.

The Olmsted County Sheriff’s Office received a report around 2:34 a.m. Thursday from a Haverhill Township woman who said her 49-year-old father and 19-year-old sister went fishing in a two-person kayak Wednesday and hadn’t been heard from since 8:30 p.m., Capt. Scott Behrns said.

The woman told the sheriff’s office that they were fishing near Wabasha and Kellogg on the Mississippi River and had left from the Half Moon landing.

Olmsted County Sheriff’s deputies contacted the Wabasha County Sheriff’s Office, who located the two shortly after 4:05 a.m. Thursday, Behrns said.

KTTC-TV reported that the pair had gotten lost in the backwaters, and quoted Wabasha County Chief Deputy Jim Warren as saying the father and daughter were dealing with exhaustion and bug bits but will be OK.
