Florida Senator Back At Work After Brief Hospital Stay
WASHINGTON (AP) _ Sen. Lawton Chiles, D-Fla., returned to the Senate late Thursday after a brief stay at Bethesda Naval Hospital for tests.
Chiles was admitted to the hospital early Wednesday after a test showed his blood pressure was high. But Chiles spokesman Jack Pridgen said the hospital examination turned up no specific cause for the elevated readings.
″They couldn’t find any problems,″ Pridgen said of the tests on Chiles.
The Florida Democrat rushed from the hospital back to the Senate floor to cast a vote for a package spending cuts and tax hikes designed to chop $85.6 billion off federal deficits over the next three years. Chiles is the ranking Democrat on the Senate Budget Committee and would have handled the bill on the floor Thursday had he been present.
Even though Chiles’ vote was not crucial - the bill passed 93-6 - the roll was held open for his arrival, stretching the normal 15-minute voting period to an hour.
