Regina Jacobs Sets 3-Mile Record
NEW YORK (AP) _ Regina Jacobs shattered the indoor world best for 3 miles Saturday, finishing in 14 minutes, 44.11 seconds at the Evian Mayor’s Trophy Meet to eclipse a mark that stood 17 years.
Jacobs, who broke the indoor world best for 2 miles last month, cut more than 9 seconds off the previous best of 14:53.80 for the rarely run 3-mile race, set by Christine McMiken of New Zealand on Feb. 22, 1985.
The 38-year-old Jacobs is having a superb season leading into next week’s USA Indoor Track & Field Championships, where she will compete in the mile.
She won the 2-mile race in 9:23.38 at the Boston Indoor Games on Jan. 27, breaking a 16-year-old world best for that distance.
On Feb. 10, Jacobs defended her title at the USA Winter Cross Country Championships.
Jacobs won silver medals at 1,500 meters in the 1997 and 1999 World Outdoor Championships.
