Brazilian police detain man carrying gold bar on flight
RIO DE JANEIRO (AP) — An Austrian born-businessman was detained in a remote state in far-western Brazil as he attempted to board a plane carrying a bar of gold, the federal police in Mato Grosso said.
Werner Rydl was detained on Friday at an airport in the town of Varzea Grande and taken to a detention center in the nearby state capital of Cuiaba, the police said in an email on Monday.
Those carrying gold within Brazil need to show a receipt, the email said.
A report on Globo television’s G1 internet portal quotes an attorney for the naturalized Brazilian as saying the 644 gram (23-ounce) bar of gold is a good-luck charm.
“He’s travelled the world with this bar of gold and till now nothing had happened,” the report quotes lawyer Andre Prieto as saying. “He’s an eccentric.”
G1 said he was released from police custody on Sunday, quoting Prieto, after a judge ruled he could await trial in liberty.
