BC-RAC--Harness Race-Horse Drowns

An official with the Ohio State Racing Commission says a horse has drowned during a harness race at a racino in Ohio. Bill Crawford, the commission’s executive director, said a driver was knocked from the sulky being pulled by the horse during a race at Miami Valley Gaming and Racing in Warren County on Monday. Crawford said Tuesday the horse broke loose and drowned after it ran into one of the ponds in the racetrack’s infield. No serious injuries to the driver were reported.

LEBANON, Ohio (AP) — An official with the Ohio State Racing Commission says a horse has drowned in a pond during a harness race at a racino in Ohio.

Bill Crawford, the commission’s executive director, said a driver was knocked from a sulky being pulled by the horse during a race at Miami Valley Gaming and Racing in Warren County on Monday. Crawford said Tuesday that the horse broke loose and drowned after it ran into one of the ponds in the racetrack’s infield.

No serious injuries to the driver were reported.

Racino spokesman Jerry Abner confirmed the drowning Tuesday. He said in a statement that Miami Valley Gaming regularly reviews safety procedures and protocol and will continue doing that.

Crawford said the commission will review the incident.
