2019 ASAE Great Ideas Conference Attendees Encouraged to Gain a Diversity of Perspectives to Spark Innovation

March 21, 2019

WASHINGTON--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Mar 21, 2019--From March 17-19, a total of 507 association executives and industry partners convened in Colorado Springs for ASAE’s 2019 Great Ideas Conference at The Broadmoor. Over three days, ASAE had nine Main Stage speakers, hosted by Visit Salt Lake, in addition to 39 Idea lab sessions, two preconference workshops, and four new leadership intensive offsite opportunities.

“Great Ideas is unique from our other events because it allows attendees to break out of a traditional conference setting,” said ASAE President & CEO John H. Graham IV, FASAE, CAE. “Attendees explored places like the Air Force Academy and the Garden of the Gods, while our speakers challenged them to change their perspectives in order to approach solutions in a new light.”

On March 17, ASAE had three Main Stage speakers Scott Shellstrom, Creative Director, Integrated Advertising Agency, Rachel Brozenske, Vice President, Allison Partners and Lecturer, UVA Darden School of Business, and Shimi Kang, MD, Clinical Associate Professor, University of British Columbia, former Medical Director, Child and Youth Mental Health, Vancouver Coastal Health.

Shellstrom’s interactive presentation encouraged attendees to find their inner da Vinci by moving beyond the fear of failure and incorporating the “Yes and” element of improv to turn ideas into a key component of innovation. Brozenske shared how everything starts with empathy, and that we should look at an issue from someone else’s perspective to jump-start the creative process. Kang reminded the audience that play is how we adapt and that the opposite of play is perfectionism, which stands in the way of innovation.

For Monday’s Main Stage session, there were three thought leaders: Vinh Giang, Cofounder, 52Cards and CEO, Luminary Productions; Neen James, attention expert; and Greg Roth, The Idea Enthusiast.

Giang used his skills as a magician to challenge attendees to experience new perspectives to create great ideas and influence the future of their organizations. Neen shared methods attendees can implement that will make people pay attention to their great ideas, and in turn share them so they can spread throughout an organizations culture. Finally, Roth outlined the thinking behind the “Challenge Mindset.” That attendees should not allow the larger end goal to hinder them from the simple, repeatable, and meaningful challenges that will get them there.

The final set of keynote speakers included David and Jonah Stillman, Coauthors, Gen Z @ Work; Sara Ross, Leadership Strategist and Vitality Advocate, Founder of the BrainAMPED Research Group; and Jeff DeGraff, PhD, Founder & Dean of Innovation, Innovatrium.

The Stillmans broke down the best methods for attendees to understand and engage Gen Z as they become employees and members. Ross gave an in-depth look at what emotional intelligence is and how it impacts the way we work with others, and our members. DeGraff encouraged the audience to employ individuals from diverse backgrounds and generations, to create an atmosphere of constructive conflict that will lead to innovation.

After a test launch during the 2018 Great Ideas Conference, a newly formatted group of Leadership Intensives were available for attendees to participate in. These intensives were designed to increase self-awareness, build collaborative communities of learners, and develop individual leadership competencies. Participants were given the opportunity to experience offsite learning at the University of Colorado, Colorado Springs Department of Innovation, Garden of the Gods, National Strength and Conditioning Association Performance Center, and an architectural tour through greater Colorado Springs.

ASAE also held two Executive Leadership Workshops before the conference, a Women’s Executive Forum, Learning Circles, and the ASAE Foundation Pour, hosted by the Broadmoor, on Monday night.
