Capital football standout Kerry Martin is among WVU recruits
HUNTINGTON - Kerry Martin Jr. from Charleston, a Capital High School standout in football and basketball, was among 18 players signing Wednesday with West Virginia University’s football program.
Martin was best known as the Capital quarterback, but WVU’s recruiting list has him as a 6-foot-1, 179-pound cornerback. He will begin college in January after graduating early from high school.
He had offers from many Football Bowl Subdivision schools, but the Mountaineers were always at the top of his list. His other finalists were Rutgers and Cincinnati.
“It was the relationship I built over time with the coaching staff (at WVU),” Martin said in a Charleston Gazette-Mail report. “They started recruiting me when I was young. I went up there as an eighth-grader on their Junior Day and that’s where it all started. When they offered me, it really didn’t take too much time to think about where I was going to go.”
WVU’s recruits also include four wide receivers, three offensive linemen and two other cornerbacks.
Ali Jennings (6-1, 180) is a wide receiver from Highland Springs High School in Richmond, Virginia. WVU’s other pass-catching recruits are junior college receiver Isaiah Esdale (6-1, 230) out of Eastern Arizona College, Winston Wright (5-10, 160) from Memorial Day High School in Pooler, Georgia, and Terence Doston (5-11, 160) from Hillsborough High School in Tampa, Florida.
Offensive lineman Donavan Beaver (6-7, 310) is from Massaponax High School in Fredericksburg, Virginia, and is joined in the recruiting class by linemates Parker Moorer (6-4, 285) from Mallard Creek High School in Charlotte, North Carolina, and Brandon Yates (6-4, 285), from Middletown, Delaware, who signed out of Liberty Baptist Academy in Nevada.
Cornerbacks in the class also include Dreshun Miller (6-2, 185) is another transfer coming in from Eastern Arizona College and Nicktroy Fortune (5-11, 182) from Central Gwinnett High School in Roswell, Georgia.
The Mountaineers signed one running back, Tony Mathis (6-foot, 191) from Orlando, Florida, who played at Cedartown High School in Georgia.
Kolton McGhee (6-0, 175) is a kicker and punter from Bishop Guilfoyle High School in Altoona, Pennsylvania.
