NEW YORK (AP) _ Thousands of Hasidic Jews clad in their traditional long black coats and felt hats marched across the Brooklyn Bridge to protest city plans to build a huge garbage incinerator near the largely Jewish neighborhood of Williamsburg.

Thousands of Hasidic women, many pushing children in strollers, marched separately behind them Thursday in keeping with the Orthodox Jewish sect's custom.

The group organized the demonstration to protest the planned construction of a $250 million garbage incinerator.

The city's Board of Estimate approved construction last month as part of a Sanitation Department plan to build eight incinerators throughout the city to handle an estimated 26,000 tons of garbage generated by the city each day.
