Man Charged With Murder After Firing Rifle Into Downstairs Apartment
NEW YORK (AP) _ A landlord enraged by noise in his building fired his rifle into his apartment floor, killing a downstairs tenant and wounding a child, police said.
The landlord, Raymond Mazzei, 35, and his two brothers then kicked in the door of the downstairs apartment, apparently unaware that anyone had been shot, police spokeswoman Carmen Melendez said Saturday.
``They went down to assault them,″ she said.
Mazzei was charged with second-degree murder and burglary after Thursday night’s incident on Staten Island. He told police that the rifle had gone off accidentally while he was cleaning it, but officers found more than one bullet hole in the downstairs apartment.
Killed was Robert Pepper, 50, while a bullet grazed the arm of 6-year-old Nadia Kemper, police said. The girl’s mother, Cathy Kemper, was not injured.
One neighbor said tenants in the apartment were ``always causing problems,″ with friends stopping by at all hours and cars honking outside.
Mazzei also was at odds with Ms. Kemper since she stopped paying rent in June, Staten Island prosecutor Tim Koller told the Daily News.
