Liverpool Reaches UEFA Cup Final
Liverpool will play in a European cup final for the first time since 1985, and Spain’s Alaves heads to its first final ever after winning UEFA Cup semifinals Thursday.
Liverpool beat Barcelona 1-0 on Gary McAllister’s penalty kick a minute before halftime to win their total-goals, home-and-away series by the same score.
Alaves, a tiny Basque club that’s been around for 80 years, beat Germany’s Kaiserslautern 4-1 behind two goals by substitute Jurica Vucko to advance on a 9-2 aggregate.
The finalists will meet May 16 in Dortmund, Germany.
Liverpool won the UEFA Cup in 1973 and 1976, and is a four-time winner of the more prestigious European Champions Cup. Alaves had never participated in a European cup before this season.
