Capriati Advances in Advanta
VILLANOVA, Pa. (AP) _ Unseeded Jennifer Capriati, winning for the first time in the Philadelphia area since 1992, beat wild-card entry Kim Clijsters of Belgium, 7-5, 6-3 in first-round play at the Advanta Championships Wednesday.
The 23-year-old Capriati, runner-up to Monica Seles in Philadelphia in 1991, will next face No. 4 seed Nathalie Tauziat of France.
``I’ve had a lot of good memories in this place,″ said Capriati, fresh from her victory last week in Quebec City, which boosted her WTA ranking to No. 26. ``But actually I knew it’s been a while since I won here.
``I know I lost to Anke Huber my first match back (after a two-year hiatus from tennis). I’m happy to get out of the first round. I think I’ve had some good matches previously here. But I try not to go back and think about past matches.″
In other matches, No. 5 seed Julie Halard-Decugis of France moved into the third round with a 3-6, 7-5 (5), 6-2 win over qualifier Maria Vento of Venezuela. Local favorite Lisa Raymond, who grew up just miles from the arena, rallied to beat Henrietta Nagyova of Switzerland 2-6, 6-3, 6-3.
