How much do Apple’s new iPhones cost? Questions answered about iPhone XS, XS Max and XR

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Apple announced the iPhone XS on Wednesday, a phone with the screen size of the iPhone 8 Plus without the bulk.

The iPhone XS Max is the largest iPhone ever produced. The screen size measures in at 6.5 inches diagonally, nearly a full inch larger than the iPhone X. It retails for $1099. The slightly smaller XS measures in at 5.8 inches diagonally and retails for $999.

The new iPhone XR -- available in a multitude of colors -- is a lower cost option with a different type of screen and camera than the other two, but still clocks in at $749. It has a screen size of 6.1 inches.

The three new phones won’t cause the same kind of buzz the iPhone X did when it was introduced last year. The iPhone X introduced Face ID and the new bezel-less design for the iPhone’s screen, which basically means that the screen goes edge-to-edge.

The event last year also introduced the 8 and 8 Plus, which kept the bezels and home button. 2018 was also the year of portrait mode, which created more professional photos through the phone’s camera.

Here are answers to some of the questions you might have about the new phones.

How big are they?

All three phones have edge-to-edge screens, completely scrapping a frame around the screen and the home button.

This allows for a larger screen while bulking up the phone.

The screen sizes, measured on a diagonal and in inches, are:

iPhone XS: 5.8 inches

iPhone XS Max: 6.5 inches

iPhone XR: 6.1 inches

For comparison, an iPhone 8 Plus phone screen size is 5.5 inches, but has bezels, so the phone is larger.

What colors do they come in?

iPhone XS: Gold, silver, space grey

iPhone XS Max: Gold, silver, space grey

iPhone XR: White, black, blue, coral, yellow, red

What type of screen does each have?

iPhone XS: OLED, Super Retina displays. Basically that means that means its clearer and brighter than LED.

iPhone XS Max: OLED, Super Retina

iPhone XR: LED, but optimized for edge-to-edge screens to create a new “Liquid Retina” screen.

How fast are they?

Apple introduced a new A-12 Bionic chip, which presenters said was up to two times faster than the A-11. This chip comes in all three phones.

What are other differences between the iPhone XS and XS Max and the XR?

Both the iPhone XS and XS Max have a dual-camera system on the back camera, where the XR only has one.

The XR is made out of aluminum with a glass back, instead of stainless steel.

There is no 3D touch on the XR, meaning you’re not able to press and hold to receive more options for icons.

All three phones have Face ID.

What about portrait mode?

The XR will have portrait mode, though it will do it a little differently than the XS and the XS Max. Basically instead of creating the portrait-style photo (sharp focus on the subject, with a slightly out-of-focus background) through the camera, software will create the effect.

How much will the new phones cost?

iPhone XS: $999

iPhone XS Max: $1,099

iPhone XR: $749

When are the new phones available?

iPhone XS, XS Max: Sept. 14 preorder, Sept. 26 release

iPhone XR: Oct. 19 preorder, Oct. 26 release.
