Browns’ Green Released From Jail

February 26, 2004

WESTLAKE, Ohio (AP) _ Cleveland Browns running back William Green was released from jail Thursday after serving a three-day sentence for drunken driving.

``I’m glad it’s out of the way,″ he said. ``I’m looking forward to getting back to the Browns and moving on with my life.″

Green, reinstated by the NFL last month after being suspended indefinitely for violating the league’s substance abuse policy, will stay with a teammate, said his attorney, Brian Downey.

Police Capt. Guy Turner said Green was a model inmate and made no special requests.

The 24-year-old back was sentenced to jail Monday. He was arrested in October and pleaded no contest. Prosecutors dropped charges of possessing marijuana and making an improper lane change.

A judge put Green on one year’s probation and ordered him to stay drug and alcohol free during that time.

Following his arrest, Green was suspended for four games by the NFL. The league then extended its penalty for the rest of the 2003 season so he could undergo counseling and treatment in Boston.

Green missed eight games for the suspension and one with a shoulder injury. He rushed for 559 yards and one touchdown before his arrest. As a rookie, Green ran for 887 yards while leading the Browns to the playoffs.

During his suspension he was hospitalized Nov. 19 with a stab wound to his back. His fiancee, Asia Gray, was charged with attacking Green in their home. This month, Green was denied a request to reunite with Gray, whose trial is scheduled for March 5.
